How QR code redirects work

Change your destination without reprinting. Track every scan. Apply your branding on the redirect.

Create your first dynamic QRSee pricing

Every dynamic QR code generated on QR2GO points to a short link on our servers. When someone scans it, we look up the current destination for that link and forward them on. That single layer of indirection is what lets you change where the QR points without ever reprinting the image.

Everything on this page reflects how QR2GO currently behaves. Where a feature is Premium, it is labelled.

Static vs dynamic QR codes

Static QR codes

The final destination URL is baked directly into the QR image. Once the QR is printed, the destination is fixed forever. No analytics are possible.

  • •Destination is encoded in the image itself
  • •Cannot be changed after printing
  • •No scan analytics
  • •Free to create on QR2GO

Dynamic QR codes

The QR image encodes a QR2GO short link. The short link resolves the current destination at scan time. Edit the destination at any point — the printed QR keeps working.

  • •Destination can be updated anytime
  • •No reprint needed when the URL changes
  • •Scan analytics are captured
  • •Premium users can configure redirect mode and branding

The three redirect modes

Your redirect mode is an account-level setting. All your dynamic QR codes use the same redirect mode at the same time.

Changing the redirect mode is a Premium feature. Free accounts use the default Explicit mode.

Explicit redirect

Default

Scanner lands on a short QR2GO page that confirms the destination, then forwards to it.

  • •A visible intermediate page is shown to the scanner
  • •Optional countdown auto-advances to the destination (configurable delay 0–30 seconds)
  • •Premium users can add their logo, title and subtitle to this page
  • •Full scan analytics are recorded

Trust, brand presence and B2B use cases where a visible step is valuable.

Hidden Tracked redirect

Premium

Scanner is forwarded immediately without seeing a QR2GO page.

  • •Instant redirect — no visible intermediate page
  • •Scan analytics are still recorded, server-side, before the redirect
  • •Requires a one-time acknowledgement in your account settings before activation
  • •No QR2GO branding is shown

Campaigns where you want a frictionless landing experience but still need scan counts and geography.

Before switching to Hidden Tracked, QR2GO asks you to confirm that you understand scanners are not shown a consent page and that any privacy obligations your jurisdiction places on you remain yours to fulfil.

Direct Untracked redirect

Premium

QR2GO records no scan data. Newly generated QRs encode the destination directly.

  • •Instant redirect — no QR2GO page
  • •No scan analytics are recorded
  • •Newly generated QR codes encode the destination URL directly in the QR image
  • •Already-printed QRs continue to route through QR2GO, but with analytics disabled

Cases where you do not want any analytics collection on QR2GO's side, or where the destination should travel inside the QR image itself.

Because newly generated QRs encode the destination directly, those particular QR images cannot be re-pointed without a reprint. Already-printed dynamic QRs created in another mode are unaffected.

One mode per account

Switching mode affects every dynamic QR code in your account at the same time. QR2GO does not currently support different redirect modes for different QRs.

How to change the destination URL

Updating where a printed QR points is a two-minute job.

  1. 1

Sign in to your QR2GO account

Open the dashboard. You need to own the QR you want to update.

  2. 2

    Open the QR code

Find it in your QR list and open its edit view.

  3. 3

    Edit the destination URL

Replace the target URL with the new one and save the changes.

  4. 4

Done — printed QRs keep working

The next scan will land on the new destination. Existing scan analytics for the QR are not deleted.

What changes — and what doesn't

  • ✓Future scans go to the new destination
  • ✓The short link the QR encodes stays the same
  • ✓The QR image you printed stays usable
  • ✓Past scan analytics are preserved

Every destination change is recorded server-side with a timestamp, the previous value and the new value. A user-facing history view is on our roadmap.

How to change your redirect mode

  1. 1

    Open your profile settings

Go to your dashboard profile page (Settings → Redirect).

  2. 2

    Pick a redirect mode

Choose Explicit, Hidden Tracked or Direct Untracked.

  3. 3

    Acknowledge if needed

Hidden Tracked requires a one-time acknowledgement that you understand scanners are not shown a consent page.

  4. 4

    Save

The new mode applies to every scan from that moment, on every dynamic QR in your account.

Changing the redirect mode requires a Premium subscription. Free accounts can read their current settings but cannot edit them.

What scan data is recorded

Only when the redirect mode actually records scans (Explicit and Hidden Tracked). Direct Untracked records nothing.

Recorded per scan

  • •Timestamp
  • •Event type (always "scan")
  • •Salted SHA-256 hash of the visitor's IP — the raw IP is never stored
  • •User agent and referrer (truncated to 500 characters)
  • •Device type (mobile or desktop) and browser, derived from the user agent
  • •Country, region and city, plus coordinates rounded to roughly 1.1 km precision
  • •Timezone and ISP, derived from the IP at scan time

About IP addresses

QR2GO does not store raw visitor IPs. Each IP is hashed with a project-wide salt using SHA-256, and only that hash is persisted. Coarse city-level geolocation is derived from the IP during the scan and stored alongside the hash.

Retention

Scan events are kept for 30 days on Free accounts and 365 days on Premium accounts, then automatically removed by a monthly cleanup job.

Frequently asked questions

My QR code is already printed. Can I change where it goes?+

Yes, as long as it is a dynamic QR. Open the QR in your dashboard, change the destination URL and save. The printed code keeps working and the next scan lands on the new destination.

Do I need to reprint if I change the destination URL?+

No. The QR image encodes a QR2GO short link, not the destination itself. Updating the destination in the dashboard is enough.

What is the difference between static and dynamic QR codes?+

A static QR encodes the final URL directly in the image, so once it is printed, the destination is locked. A dynamic QR encodes a QR2GO short link, which we resolve to the current destination at scan time.

What is the difference between Explicit, Hidden Tracked and Direct Untracked?+

Explicit shows a brief QR2GO page (with optional countdown and Premium branding) and records analytics. Hidden Tracked redirects instantly and still records analytics server-side. Direct Untracked redirects instantly and records nothing.

Does changing the destination delete old analytics?+

No. Past scan events remain attached to the QR. The destination change is also recorded server-side as an audit entry.

Can I see scan analytics?+

Yes. The dashboard shows per-QR scan analytics — counts, timestamps, geography (country/region/city), device and browser breakdowns — within your retention window.

Can I use my own branding on the redirect page?+

Yes, with a Premium subscription. In Explicit mode you can add your logo, a custom title and a custom subtitle to the redirect page.

Is redirect tracking GDPR-compliant?+

QR2GO is built for European businesses. Raw IP addresses are never stored — only a salted SHA-256 hash. Coordinates are reduced to roughly 1.1 km precision. Retention is bounded, and Direct Untracked records nothing at all. See the Privacy Policy for the full disclosure.

Can different QR codes have different redirect modes?+

No. The redirect mode is currently an account-level setting and applies to every dynamic QR in your account at the same time.

What happens if QR2GO is temporarily unavailable?+

Dynamic QRs depend on QR2GO being reachable to resolve the destination. We host in Germany on infrastructure built for high availability; if you want printed media to work without any external dependency, generate a static QR or use Direct Untracked mode (which encodes the destination directly in newly generated images).
